Alcon 3Q profit down 18 percent without tax gain
Eye drug maker Alcon Inc. said Wednesday its profit fell 18 percent in the third quarter compared with a year ago, when it received a large tax benefit.
Opponents of food tax say Tennessee's highest average tax in nation
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. Some Chattanooga area residents are driving to Georgia to buy their groceries. That's apparently the case all along Tennessee's borders because a report by Tennesseans for Fair Taxation shows Tennessee has the nation's highest average tax on food: eight-point-four percent.
More than 150 Nassau residents packed a rare weekend public hearing yesterday to discuss a proposal by the county tax assessor to replace the school property tax system with an income tax.
